9/11- This is a day many people will never forget. A day that reminds you of how life can drastically change without warning. This day made our Country stronger and taught many people to live each day to the fullest. That day changed our nation, our lives, and sadly caused many people to lose their lives and their loved ones.
Do you remember what you were doing on September 11th, 2001? Do you remember where you were?
I was in Indiana (boring huh?). I was just a wee little lass. I didn’t understand much of what was going on but I do remember my parents’ reaction was.
I was in school when the Twin Towers were hit. The teachers were out in the hall congregating like usual, but this time their faces were a bit different when they entered the room. My teacher came in and explained to us what was going on. We probably all had blank faces, so he
drew a picture for us on the overhead projector. Then he gave up and turned on the TV to explain. The TV said it all. What was this? Is it real? I thought maybe it was a movie. My brother and I got out of school early and my mom was able to leave work early as well to be with us. When we arrived home, she was so scared and shooken up. She wasn’t sure if we were okay or not. She sat down with my brother and me and explained as much as she could to a 12 and 10 year old. We decided to turn the TV off because it was so much to process. It’s hard to imagine what the people in New York and Washington DC were feeling.
When my father came home he was very upset and sad. I didn’t realize that 9/11 would affect his job. He got laid off and moved to Georgia while we finished school. We moved down there shortly after the school year and it was the biggest culture shock of my life! City life, so many people, different cultures – I fell in love right away!
I remember this day partially because of the major impact it caused within my family and on my childhood. If we had never moved from Indiana, then I might still be there working on a farm (exciting, right?) 9/11/01 could have affected my family and I so much more but we didn’t let it. I went with the flow of life and ever since, I still go with the flow because you never know where life is going to take you.
Just yesterday, September 10, 2015, Federal Officials discovered that a Florida man was plotting a terrorist attack in Kansas City. Luckily, he was under surveillance and was in communication with an Informant. It is such a relief that this for this country’s security is constantly monitoring suspicious activity to prevent such attacks.
Let’s all take a moment today, on the fourteenth anniversary of this tragic event, to remember all of those who we lost. Thank you to all of the heroes who risked their lives to rescue others. You will be forever on our minds and in our hearts!
