Not a bad start to the day, eh?

The Clash of Breakfasts

Way back in the 12th century, most of Europe preferred a hardy breakfast that consisted of meat and eggs. This large first meal of the day made sense for the hardworking physical laborers in Europe. However, in an effort to class things up, France rejected this heavy meal and started to serve a light breakfast of pastries, fruit and coffee for breakfast. These lighter meals gained traction throughout the rest of Europe and are the basis for the continental breakfast we know and love today. Also, If you haven’t guessed it by now, the continual breakfast gets its name because it started in Continental Europe!

Travelers Bring their Breakfasts with Them

Fast-forward to the 1850’s and we notice a lot more Europeans started traveling to the United States. Well much like you would stay with us at Ramada Maingate At The Park, these travelers needed a place to stay and were hungry for breakfast! The US hotels soon discovered the European travelers’ taste preferences and started to offer fruit, pastries and coffee to their guests as way to incentivize them to stay. These early continental breakfasts worked well for the travelers because they were quick and light, which meant more time to see the sights!

At the same time, more Americans were traveling to Europe and were enjoying the traditional continental breakfasts. Americans really seemed to enjoy the breakfast and only helped spread its popularity back in the States. Just think about it…if all of these people had not been traveling the world you may not have the same eggs, toast, and fruit  you love every time you stay with us!
